I suggest install freecad by this way, which is much easier to install the latest version. In your case, I think you already added conda-forge to channels. There is an issue that conda-forge hasn’t been added to the channels, which means all the dependents cannot find the right channel to update.

% conda update freecad -c=freecad/label/dev % conda config -add channels freecad/label/dev % conda create -name fcenv -channel conda-forge freecad In your post there are two steps to install Freecad and update to the latest version:

Only can update to version 21xxxx, still can’t use addon manager. However, I’ve found the same issue as others that I can’t update to the latest version by strictly follow your instructions.

But LTS is intended to make things simpler and more stable for people who need that, instead of the latest and greatest whistles and bells. Thanks for your post that I finally installed Freecad 0.19 on my Mac with macOS 11.1. You'll want to update packages occasionally (monthly is OK) so you keep up on things like security fixes. You're still responsible for your own machine, of course. From there, it's a matter of personal preferences which one is easier to use. Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Mint, all offer LTS versions. LTS versions are usually provided by bigger vendors that have a road map planning releases farther into the future. It also means that the patches you get will have had the most testing, and are likely to be more stable as a result. Essentially LTS means that if FreeCAD runs on it today, it'll probably keep working without upgrading until at least 2027. That also generally means they don't change "major things" as often.

May I suggest looking at distros that provide Long Term Support (LTS) versions? LTS means they intend to support that particular version much farther into the future, so you don't have to upgrade nearly as often. It sounds like you want a version that doesn't require a lot of work on your part, and you might not be as interested in new features added to Linux as you are to new features that will eventually be added to FreeCAD. This gave me a rough estimate about how much support I might be able to seek. One way I looked to help me choose was by looking at the various reddit groups for different distros to see how large/active they were. I got answers from "Ford Ranger" to "Peterbilt". I gather that this is very much like choosing a new truck to buy for hauling my groceries and then asking various people what is best.

At the end of the day, it does not take very long (and I am an absolute novice) to download Rufus, and then use it to prep a few different Linux distros and put them on a thumb drive to then try them out to find one that worked with my hardware. That being said I am a big fan of going with whatever product has good community support and tried hard to get some flavor of Ubuntu to work for me for that reason. Majaro was mentioned in an old thread as a working distro for this particular issue with this particular hardware.

For me I ended up with Majaro on an old chromebook because I tried a half dozen other distros and had sound issues with all of them. Looks like folks have given you some great advice below.
